No. 13 Texas Tech opened Big 12 play with a dramatic 28 to 26 victory over No. 22 Houston on Friday night, stopping quarterback Conner Weigman inches short of the goal line on a potential tying conversion.
One final stop decides it
Houston pulled within two points when Weigman found Patrick Overmyer for a 10 yard touchdown with 49 seconds remaining. Weigman kept the ball on the conversion attempt and lunged toward the goal line, but his knee touched the turf before the ball crossed the plane. The ruling stood after review.
The finish completed a Texas Tech comeback from an early 10 point deficit. Will Hammond passed for 257 yards and a touchdown, while J'Koby Williams and Cameron Dickey added rushing scores in the second half. Kenny Johnson led the Red Raiders with 113 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Weigman threw for 282 yards and three touchdowns for Houston. The Cougars produced 458 total yards and held the ball for more than 33 minutes, but two red zone drives ended with field goals before the final possession.
Texas Tech starts conference play with a statement
The victory gave Texas Tech its eighth consecutive win over Houston and its 10th straight home victory. It also marked the Red Raiders' first comeback of at least 10 points against a ranked opponent since their overtime win over Texas in 2022.
Texas Tech is unbeaten through three games and begins conference play with a win. Houston took its first loss of the season after nearly forcing overtime in one of the first major ranked matchups of the college football weekend.
